Ancient Origins of Traditional Martial Arts

Drawings of traditional martial artsEven prior to pictures, paintings, or drawings, traditional martial arts (Moo Doe) history came through legends. Historically, there are different movements and different legends associated origin of Moo Doe. Many of these are tied with “Bagwa.” Some people say that the Bagwa style originated about 200 to 400 years ago, while others argue that it is an ancient martial arts form which dates back several thousand years. Oom Yung Doe martial arts follows the legend that Bagwa was the name of a real person and that he was the founder of this line of martial arts about 1500 years ago.

Grandmaster “Iron” Kim

8th Generation Grandmaster of the Oom Yung Line of Martial Arts

Grandmaster "Iron" KimAt the age of seven, Grandmaster “Iron” Kim began his life’s path in the study and practice of martial arts. To achieve perfection of his martial arts movements, Grandmaster “Iron” Kim fequented the solitude of the mountain and ocean areas of Asia to practice the forms and techniques that he learned from his grandmaster, Grandmaster Wang Po, the 7th generation Grandmaster of Yin Yang Doe.

In 1956, Grandmaster “Iron” Kim competed in and won the All Asia Championship, and was soon recognized as the undisputed champion of all Asia.

In the early 1960′s Grandmaster “Iron” Kim expanded his quest for knowledge, seeking out masters who had reached a higher levels knowledge, skill, and ability. Training and sharing with them, he developed master level expertise in the 8 main east Asian styles, becoming one of a few elite practitioners who were masters in 8 styles.

Pursuing a sense of mission, Grandmaster “Iron” Kim determined to bring the Oom Yung line of martial arts to people of all nations. To do that, he chose to build a strong foundation of martial arts in the United States from which to spread worldwide.

Traditional Martial Arts in Issaquah

Today, the Oom Yung line of martial arts is taught in the United States and throughout the world under the name Oom Yung Doe by Grandmaster “Iron” Kim. It encompasses the forms and movements taught over the centuries since the time of the first generation Grandmaster “Bagwa.” Other styles of East Asian Moo Doe were incorporated into the original Oom Yung line by Grandmaster “Iron” Kim.

Today about twenty percent of Oom Yung Doe is derived from other styles of East Asian martial arts. These are taught through our “8 Martial Arts Taught as 1” program. Instruction under the guidance of Grandmaster “Iron” Kim is available in the Oom Yung Doe schools here in the Seattle area, where we have been teaching for more than 30 years. Our programs in the Issaquah location are available for all levels of students and people of all ages.
