Self-Defense Training

Self-Defense Training Powered by Oom Yung Doe

The real life self-defense is nothing like the situations that come up in most martial arts tournaments. Most of the techniques taught in many of the schools in the U.S. focus on scoring points in competitive matches, not on dealing with an actual attacker. Due to this inconsistency, many individuals who have trained in these martial art styles have no more self-defense ability than the average person.

self-defense judoOom Yung Doe is committed to effective self-defense training. We have been teaching students of all ages how to properly defend themselves against single and multiple attackers for more than three decades. Unlike a tournament, in most self-defense situations the attacker(s) are close and the defender must react from a natural standing position. Competitors are usually awarded points merely for contact in a tournament so students do not develop the ability to strike with the force necessary in a real self-defense scenario.

Effective Self-Defense Classes

Experience Heightened Awareness & Greater Confidence
In our classes, students learn to react quickly and explosively in close range. Applying the movements of Kung Fu, Aikido, Hapkido, Udo, Jiu-Jitsu, Kong Su, and Bagwa, students are able to use the strength of their entire body to powerfully strike in weak points, manipulate joints, or take down an opponent.

Because the focus is on disabling an attacker and not on scoring points in a tournament, our student’s self-defense is focused on defeating an attacker. This includes very effective blocks, the art of redirection and submission holds (which protects both the student and the attacker), as well as powerful strikes to key areas of the body such as:

  • Ears
  • Nose
  • Throat
  • Solar Plexus
  • Groin
  • Knees

Students start by learning effective techniques for their body type against a punch, grab, or kick. These strikes work with natural strengths so they may be picked up in a short amount of time. In addition, students immediately begin to work on strength, speed, accuracy, coordination, and reaction time. As their self-defense training progresses, students develop the ability to match the level of force (or redirection) to the situation.

Be Prepared for Any Attack
knife self-defenseThe amount of time it takes an individual to reach their self-defense goals will depend on their physical and mental condition. In three to six months of self-defense training, you will feel confident against the most common attacks you might experience on the street. After a year, the student begins to develop confidence in more advanced self-defense techniques. This takes longer to absorb because of the greater coordination and upper body strength needed to manipulate the attacker’s body.

After two years of self-defense classes  and consistent practice, the student should be capable of defending against almost any punch, kick or grab from almost any attacker and can even apply their abilities against multiple attackers. Eventually, regardless of their size, or the number of attackers, a higher level Oom Yung Doe practitioner will be able to defend and those around them in any situation.
